Hǝnʎǝmdzi Mǝkola/Yorke Island Conservancy

This conservancy was established pursuant to government’s land use decision for the Central Coast Land and Resource Management Plan area. Hənʎəmdᶻi Məkola/Yorke Island Conservancy is in the asserted traditional territories of the K’ómoks, We Wai Kai, Wei Wai Kum and Xwemalhkwu First Nations.It is situated off the most westerly point of Hardwicke Island at the divide between Johnstone Strait and Sunderland Channel.This conservancy protects a significant historic site as Yorke Island has been designated and protected for its role in National defence prior to, and during World War II. During the Second World War, the island housed the principal gun emplacement guarding Johnstone Strait.
