WorkCamp Marketplace

Messaging Buyers and Sellers (and Sending Offers)

How Marketplace Messaging Works

Every listing on the WorkCamp Marketplace has a built-in messaging system that lets buyers and sellers talk without sharing personal contact info. When you message someone through a listing, your conversation is stored in your Messages inbox on the marketplace site, and you'll get email notifications when the other person replies.

Why use in-app messaging instead of jumping straight to phone numbers and email? Three reasons:

  • Privacy. You never have to share your phone number or personal email with someone you've never met.
  • A record of the conversation. If something goes sideways later, the messages are still in your inbox. That's protection for both sides.
  • Spam protection. Scammers can't easily harvest your contact info from a listing.

Sending a Message About a Listing

  1. Open the listing you're interested in.
  2. Click the Message Seller button on the listing page.
  3. Type your message. A good first message is short, polite, and asks a specific question — not just "Is this still available?" That message is so common most sellers ignore it.
  4. Click Send. The seller will get an email notification and the message will appear in their inbox.

Good First Messages

The best opening messages show you've actually read the listing and are seriously interested. Examples:

  • "Hi — I'm looking at your Honda EU2200i listing. Does it still have the original soft case? And would you take $850 if I can pick it up this weekend?"
  • "Hi, I saw your slide topper for sale. I have a 2019 Grand Design and I'm trying to figure out if this would fit. Can you tell me the exact length?"
  • "Interested in the toad car. Is it still available, and would you consider letting me bring a mechanic friend to look it over before I commit?"

Compare those to "still available?" — which gives the seller nothing to work with and looks like you're spamming a hundred listings at once.

Sending and Receiving Offers

If you'd like to make a formal offer below the asking price, you don't have to do it through chat. Listings have a dedicated Make an Offer button that sends a structured offer the seller can accept, decline, or counter.

How to Make an Offer

  1. From the listing page, click Make an Offer.
  2. Enter your offer amount.
  3. Optionally add a short note explaining your offer (e.g. "I can pick up this weekend with cash").
  4. Click Send Offer.

The seller gets a notification and can accept, decline, or counter from their dashboard. Accepted offers appear in both your conversations as a confirmed deal — but the actual exchange of money and the item still happens between you and the seller in person or however you arrange.

Receiving Offers as a Seller

When a buyer sends you an offer, it shows up in your Offers tab. You have three options:

  • Accept — locks in the price and notifies the buyer. From there, work out pickup or shipping details through messages.
  • Counter — propose a different price. The buyer can then accept, counter again, or walk away.
  • Decline — politely closes the offer. You can also add a short note explaining why.

Negotiation Etiquette

The work-camping community is small. Members run into each other again at campgrounds, on the forum, at rallies. Treat negotiations like you'd treat a real-life conversation — because that's effectively what they are.

  • Don't lowball aggressively. Offering 30% of asking price on a clearly fair listing is insulting and gets you ignored. A 10-15% offer is reasonable on most things.
  • Don't ghost. If you send an offer or message and change your mind, send a quick "Thanks anyway, I'm going to pass." Sellers remember the buyers who waste their time.
  • Honor accepted deals. If you accept an offer or commit to a pickup, follow through. Backing out at the last minute hurts your reputation on a marketplace where reviews matter.
  • Be patient with response times. Members are work campers and travelers. Some people only check the marketplace every few days. Don't fire off five "anyone there?" messages in an hour.

When It's Safe to Move Off-Site

Eventually, most successful deals end up off the marketplace — exchanging phone numbers to coordinate pickup, sharing a shipping address, sending payment via your preferred method. That's normal.

The general rule: use marketplace messaging for everything up to "we have a deal," then move to phone or text for the practical logistics. Don't share your phone number, address, or payment details until you've actually agreed on the deal.

If a buyer or seller insists on moving the conversation off-site immediately — before you've discussed the item, condition, or price — that's a red flag. Legitimate buyers and sellers are happy to talk through the marketplace first.

Reporting a Bad Actor

If someone is being abusive, sending scam messages, or pushing you to do something that feels wrong, every conversation has a Report option. Reports go straight to the marketplace moderation team. You can also email [email protected] directly with screenshots if it's urgent.

The marketplace removes scammers and bad actors, but moderators only know about problems when members report them. If something feels off, say something.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I message a seller without making an offer?

Yes — most conversations start as plain messages. Use Make an Offer only when you're ready to commit to a price.

Do I get notified when someone replies?

Yes. You'll get an email notification, and the new message will appear in your marketplace Messages inbox.

Can I delete a message I sent by mistake?

You can't unsend a message after the recipient has seen it, but you can delete entire conversations from your inbox.

What if a seller stops replying?

It happens. Members travel, lose reception, or change their mind. Wait a few days, send a polite follow-up, and if there's still no response, move on to other listings.
