Changing Your Username
Your username (@handle) is your identity in the community. Historically usernames were permanent, but we've heard from members who registered in a hurry and wanted a different handle. WorkCampConnect now allows one username change per account, for the life of the account.
The Rules at a Glance
- One change, ever. Each account gets exactly one username change. After you use it, the username becomes permanent.
- Same format rules as registration. 3–30 characters, letters/numbers/underscores/hyphens only, automatically screened for profanity and impersonation. See Username & Display Name Rules.
- Old username held for 90 days. When you change, your old handle is reserved for 90 days so nobody can impersonate you immediately. After 90 days it becomes available for anyone to register.
- Applies to the forum too. Changing your username on WorkCampConnect updates your forum identity in the same operation. Your post history stays — it's just the @handle on each post that updates.
How to Change Your Username
- Log in and go to Dashboard → Account → My Household
- Scroll to the Username section
- Type your new username in the field
- You'll see live availability feedback as you type
- Click Change username
- Confirm you understand this is a one-time change
The change takes effect immediately on both WorkCampConnect and the forum.
If You've Already Used Your One Change
If you've already changed your username once and you have a legitimate reason to change it again (harassment, legal name change, etc.), contact support. Our team can help on a case-by-case basis.
What If the Username I Want Is Taken?
If someone else is actively using that username, you can't take it. If it's in our 90-day reservation pool (because another member recently changed away from it), you'll see a message that it's temporarily unavailable and when it will be released.
